=========== PRODUCT INFORMATION ==========
WHAT'S NEW IN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR 5.5.1
-------------------------------------
Adobe Illustrator 5.5.1 for SGI fixes problem on IRIX 6.2 and Impact machines.
This includes the following:
Fix for a crash when dialogs are brought up repeatedly.
Fix for a visual problem so that menus appear properly on Impact machines.
Fix for an event queue overflow as windows come up and down.
Installing Illustrator 5.5.1 will update Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Separator
executables.
WHAT'S NEW IN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR 5.5
-----------------------------------
Adobe Illustrator 5.5 for SGI contains many enhancements over version 3.5. A
complete list of new product features, and the other applications included
in the Adobe Illustrator package can be found in the Adobe Illustrator
5.5 Getting Started Guide.
INSTALLING ILLUSTRATOR 5.5
-----------------------------------
Instructions are provided in the Getting Started Guide for Easy Installation
and Custom Installation of version 5.5. It is not necessary to delete version
3.5 to install version 5.5.
LAUNCHING ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR
-----------------------------------
The following is a quick summary on how to launch Adobe Illustrator. Unless
you have obtained a valid license to enable full functionality,
Adobe Illustrator will run in Demo mode with the Save and Print functionality
disabled. Make sure that you have read the Adobe Illustrator Getting
Started Guide in order to optimize your environment so Illustrator will
run as fast as possible. If you encounter errors, consult the
Trouble Shooting Section in the Getting Started Guide.
To start Adobe Illustrator from the SGI desktop, double-click on
the Illustrator Program Icon (illustrator) located in the
Desktop's Application catalog.
If you followed the Easy or Custom Installation procedures, the illustrator
start-up script is linked to /usr/bin, so you can also launch Illustrator
by typing into a UNIX shell window:
% illustrator
IMPORTANT: If you launch Illustrator from a UNIX shell, make sure you are
not logged in as root!
When you launch Adobe Illustrator the first time, it creates a working directory
(AdobeIllustrator5.5) in your home directory that contains the standard Adobe
Illustrator files. Many of the files in this location are actually links to the
Illustrator installation area.
WINDOW MANAGERS TESTED
-----------------------------------
Adobe Illustrator for SGI has only been tested with the 4D window manager.
If you are using a different window manager Illustrator is not guaranteed to
work completely or correctly.
=========== SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION TO PRINTED DOCUMENTATION ==========
TIFF FILES CAN BE PLACED AS ART AND AS A TEMPLATE
-----------------------------------
A new feature present only in the UNIX version of Adobe Illustrator 5.5 is the
ability to place TIFF images as art or as a template. This is made possible by
Illustrator's conversion of the TIFF file into an EPS file. Just choose Place Art
from the File menu and navigate to your TIFF image. Select it in the file list and
click the Place button. At this point, the application will ask you to specify a
directory to save the EPS version of the TIFF file. Once this is done, the
application places the new EPS version of the TIFF image into your document.
The original TIFF image is left unchanged.
Contrary to the Getting Started Guide, p. 3, you cannot open bitmapped-based
PICT files as artwork. Bitmapped-based PICT images can only be opened as
a template. Object-oriented PICT images, however, can be opened as either a
template or as artwork.
FONT PANEL
-----------------------------------
Adobe Illustrator 5.5 for SGI contains a powerful and very flexible set of
dialog boxes for previewing and choosing fonts. A user gains access to these
dialogs by choosing "Font Panel..." from the Font menu. The Font Panel will
allow you to view the Type 1 fonts installed on your UNIX system, create new
instances of Multiple Master fonts, and use fonts in Illustrator docu-
ments. To learn more about using the Font Panel, please see the Adobe Type
Installer User Guide.
ACCESSING THE EXTENDED CHARACTER SET
-----------------------------------
To see how to get special characters into your Illustrator document, refer
to the file KeyMapping.ps (which can be found in <installdir>/Illustrator_5.5/
doc/KeyMapping.ps or on the CD-ROM in /cdrom/adobe/illus/KeyMapping.ps).
To view KeyMapping.ps print it on a PostScript printer or use Adobe
ShowPS to view it.
USING THE ILLUSTRATOR_MEMORY VARIABLE
-----------------------------------
Adobe Illustrator 5.5 has implemented a method of specifying a memory usage
ceiling. Illustrator will allocate RAM as needed until this amount has been
reached, wherein Illustrator will warn the user that the available RAM is
becoming low. By default Illustrator will allocate only as much memory as is
available in RAM. You may, however, wish to increase or decrease this set-
ting for your use. This is made possible by the ILLUSTRATOR_MEMORY environ-
ment variable. You may specify in megabytes the maximum amount of memory
that can be used by Illustrator. However, certain limitations must be
observed if the product is to function properly. The variable should never
be set less than 32 (units in megabytes) nor should a user set it higher than
the total amount of RAM + SWAP space - 28. This will allay memory complica-
tions with Illustrator and the X-Server.
MACINTOSH/UNIX FILE TRANSFERS
-----------------------------------
Certain problems may be encountered when transferring files from UNIX to the
Macintosh or vice versa. Illustrator-UNIX has extensive built-in support for
many of the most popular file transfer mechanisms. If you are unable to open
files directly into UNIX that have been transferred, it is likely an incon-
sistency in the way Illustrator is saving the resource portion of files.
This is easily rectified by selecting the appropriate file format from the
INFO/File Systems Options dialog. You may also set the environment variable
ILLUSTRATOR_DFT_FS that will cause all added directory mount points within
Illustrator-UNIX to default the specified format. For more information,
please see the Getting Started Guide.
IRIShare SUPPORT IN ILLUSTRATOR 5.5
-----------------------------------
If you make a Macintosh volume available to SGI IRIX system using the
IRIShare product then you can use it within Illustrator by specifying
ILLUSTRATOR_IRISHARE_SUPPORT environment variable. To
enable it, do the following:
C-Shell users:
setenv ILLUSTRATOR_IRISHARE_SUPPORT True
Bourne Shell users:
export ILLUSTRATOR_IRISHARE_SUPPORT
ILLUSTRATOR_IRISHARE_SUPPORT=True
IRIShare support is disabled by default in Illustrator.
======================= KNOWN ISSUES =========================
24-BIT EPS PREVIEWS: DISPLAY COLOR MAY NOT BE ACCURATE
-----------------------------------
A new feature in Adobe Illustrator 5.5 for SGI is the use of 24-bit previews
for placed EPS images. Display PostScript (DPS) will generate a 24-bit pre-
view only if the EPS file doesn't already have a preview saved with it. If an
EPS has its own preview, then Illustrator will just use that preview. To get
an existing EPS file to have a 24-bit preview when placed into Illustrator,
simply open the original EPS file and re-save it without a preview. You may
notice that the colors in the 24-bit previews do not exactly match the col-
ors of non-DPS previews. This is only a visual discrepancy and will not
affect the original file when it is printed or separated.
VIRTUAL SWAP SHOULD BE TURNED OFF WHEN USING ILLUSTRATOR
-----------------------------------
When using Illustrator, virtual swap should be turned off to avoid
random application crashes. Virtual swap is turned off by default
on SGI machines. At launch time, if Illustrator determines that virtual
swap is turned on, it will issue a warning and give instructions on
how to turn virtual swap off.
INSTALLER AUTOMATICALLY UPDATES DPSFONTS.UPR FILE
-----------------------------------
When Illustrator's installer is launched, the user will be prompted for
permission to have the installer automatically update the DPSFonts.upr
file that resides in /usr/lib/DPS. By having the installer automatically
update the DPSFonts.upr file, a problem with inappropriate fonts appearing
in the Illustrator Font Panel will be avoided.
If the DPSFonts.upr file is not updated, in the Font Panel, if you select a
Type 1 font distributed with IRIX, the following message may appear,
"Font Alert: The selected font contains an error and is unusable."
After clicking OK to dismiss the dialog, the typeface name that was
selected may disappear from the list. Once Illustrator is relaunched,
the typeface will reappear, and the same problem will happen again.
You will see this message if the actual fonts installed in /usr/lib/DPS area on the
system are not up to date with the information in the /usr/lib/DPS/DPSFonts.upr.
For example, SGI showcase installs fonts in that area but does not update the
DPSFonts.upr file.
If you choose to manually update the DPSFonts.upr file instead of having
the installer do it automatically, here is what you should do:
1. su root
2. cd /usr/lib/DPS
3. mv DPSFonts.upr DPSFonts.upr.org
4. <installdir>/bin/makepsres -nb -o DPSFonts.upr /usr/lib/DPS/AFM /usr/lib/DPS/outline
5. chmod 644 DPSFonts.upr
6. Logout as root and restart Illustrator.
IRIX 5.2 INTERMITTENT WINDOW MANAGER CRASH
-----------------------------------
In IRIX 5.2, the 4D window manager will occasionally crash for no apparent reason.
When this happens, all the window frames disappear, making it impossible to move or
focus windows. At this point, you can either choose Log Out from the Desktop menu,
or use another computer to remote login and restart the window manager by typing,
"4DWM -display <machine_name>:0". To eliminate the problem, upgrade to IRIX 5.3.
TABLET ISSUES
-----------------------------------
If large variables are set while using Brush tool, you may see minor distor-
tion at beginning and end of stroke.
While using Brush tool, a rare instance may occur where lifting the stylus
off the tablet may not be recognized by application.
MOUNTED VOLUMES OF THE SAME NAME NOT SHOWING
-----------------------------------
When two mounted volumes have the same name, only one will show up when you
traverse to the desktop in Open File dialog. Use the Go To... Option menu to
locate the other volume.
ILLUSTRATOR KEYBOARD MAPPING CONFLICTS WITH 4DWM
-----------------------------------
Illustrator and 4D window manager keyboard commands are in
conflict when the "Macintosh Keyboard" file is selected in Keyboard
Preferences. For example, the Illustrator keyboard command to Zoom
(Alt-Space-click) will bring up window manager menu.
You can comment these lines out in your .4Dwmrc or .mwmrc files to prevent
window manager from intercepting these key sequences from Illustrator.
Copy /usr/lib/X11/system.4Dwmrc to ~/.4Dwmrc if you do not have one already.
Put a '!' character in front of all the lines which have Alt<Key>Space
or Alt<Key>Tab in the SGI 4D Window Manager Key bindings section. Save the
file and restart the window manager to put the changes into effect.
Note that this change will affect all your applications.
UNIX-PC AND CUSTOM KEYBOARD MAPPINGS MAY CONFLICT WITH WINDOW MANAGER
-----------------------------------
No matter what Keyboard Preferences setting is currently active, you cannot use the
keyboard shortcut Control - Alt - 1. This key (Ctrl - Alt - 1) sequence
is built into 4D Window Manager and can not be overwritten from .4Dwmrc file.
PRINT SPOOL ISSUES
-----------------------------------
When the print command is issued from Illustrator, it writes out the print
file into the ~/AdobeIllustrator5.5/Illustrator.MacFiles/System/Temporary Items
directory. It then issues an lpr or lp command, which will copy the file to
the printer spooling directories (usually in the /var/spool/lp area) and the
file will print from there. It is important that you have sufficient disk
space for all these copies when printing large files.
If Illustrator is aborted from a UNIX shell window (e.g., Ctrl - C) while it is
in the process of printing, a temporary PostScript file may be left behind
in the Temporary Items directory and will need to be manually deleted to
free up disk space.
INSTALLING NET ACCOUNT AS ROOT OVER NFS
-----------------------------------
If you install Illustrator on a network directory as root, NFS gives login
"root" LESS permission over an NFS mount than it gives to normal users. One
of the consequences of this is that it cannot preserve root-ownership of
files created by root onto the network volume. Instead, it sets the owner-
ship to "nobody" (which corresponds to the user-id of a negative value).
ILLUSTRATOR MAY NOT LAUNCH IF WORKING DIRECTORY IS A XINET DIRECTORY
-----------------------------------
Adobe Illustrator 5.5 for UNIX cannot run if your working directory is a
Xinet exported directory. To prevent complications, be certain to avoid
setting this mount point (Illustrator.MacFiles) to KA-Share Xinet from
INFO File Systems. If you use the ILLUSTRATOR_DFT_FS variable, be certain
that at startup you specify that this directory is of another File share
format such as AppleDouble. If ever you receive a message that Illustrator
cannot launch because a file .HSancillary is present, remove the file .HSancillary
from your working directory (ILLUSTRATOR_ROOT), and after transferring the files
be certain that the directory file share format for your working directory is
not set to Xinet.
EXTRANEOUS XLIB MESSAGES MAY APPEAR IN THE CONSOLE
-----------------------------------
Occasionally, messages such as Xlib: sequence lost
(0x10003 > 0xfd4) in reply type 0x16! appear in the console window. These
messages are harmless and can be ignored.
IF ILLUSTRATOR APPEARS FROZEN, USE ESCAPE KEY
-----------------------------------
Illustrator may sometimes appear frozen; however, pressing the escape key
will often unlock the frozen condition. For example, you might accidentally pull a
menu down and then click on the menu bar while the menu is still open. This will
seemingly hang the application. To escape this state, just press the escape key.
DON'T USE EXTENDED ASCII CHARACTERS IN FILE NAMES
-----------------------------------
Illustrator has difficulty if you try to save files using extended ASCII
characters such as a degree symbol or inverted Spanish exclamation point
in the file name; you might find that you cannot save other files in
that same directory.
MOSAIC FILTER MAY REQUIRE MORE RAM
-----------------------------------
If high values (over 150) are used in the Tiles field of the
Mosaic dialog, additional RAM may be required to complete the
operation.
REQUEST LICENSE SCRIPT CAN ONLY PRINT ON SYSTEM V
-----------------------------------
The AdobeIllustrator.requestlicense script uses the lp -d command
to print the license form. This command only works with System V lp.
If this script fails, you can edit the script to print properly on
your system, or fill out the hard copy License and Registration form
included in the Illustrator box.
MULTIPLE MASTER FONT ISSUES
-----------------------------------
The Multiple Master Font Panel, which is accessible from the
Font Panel, allows you to create custom Multiple
Master font instances. If more instances are added than fit into the
window, no scroll bar is added. When 2 or 3 more blends are
added to the list, the scroll bar will eventually appear.
Multiple Master font instances are only compatible with applications based
on the Display PostScript system, not with applications making standard
X font calls. (See the Adobe Type Installer readme file and the Adobe Type
Installer User Guide for more information.)
HOW TO FIX PREFERENCES IF THEY APPEAR CORRUPTED
-----------------------------------
If your Preferences appear corrupted and do not behave as
expected, the following steps will return the Preferences
to a known state:
Change to your home directory.
% cd
Identify any files which are in your working directory,
~/AdobeIllustrator5.5, which you do not wish to delete
and move them to a location outside your working directory.
(Note that ~ stands for the full path to your home directory.)
Remove the working directory.
% rm -rf AdobeIllustrator5.5
Quit and relaunch Illustrator.
After these steps, you will need to set up your Preferences once
again. An additional note is that custom page sizes are stored in the
Illustrator working directory at <working_directory>/Illustrator.MacFiles/
System/Preferences/CustomPageSizes. If you delete your preferences or
working directory, all the page sizes that you have created will be lost
unless you first move this file to a safe directory and then return it to
it's original location after restarting Illustrator.
USING ILLUSTRATOR AND TYPE INSTALLER TOGETHER
-----------------------------------
If you use Type Installer to remove a font, while Illustrator
is using a document which contains the same font, the Character
palette will behave strangely. It is recommended that you
shut down all running applications before using Type Installer
to remove fonts.
CHECK SPELLING FILTER THINKS WORDS WITH APOSTROPHES ARE MISSPELLED
-----------------------------------
The Check Spelling filter catches words with apostrophes such as "don't" that
have been changed by the Smart Punctuation filter from straight keyboard quote
marks to typographer's quote marks and lists them as misspelled. You might want
to spell-check your text before applying the Smart Punctuation filter.
============= ADDITIONAL PROGRAM ERRORS =============
SAVE YOUR WORK AND RESTART AFTER A PROGRAM ERROR
-----------------------------------
Error: Could not complete your request because of a program error.
If you receive a program error while running Adobe Illustrator, it is recom-
mended that you immediately save all your documents and exit the applica-
tion. Continuing to work with the program while your environment is in this
state may cause unpredictable results.
ERROR IF NOT ENOUGH SWAP SPACE
-----------------------------------
Error: Could not complete operation - not enough swap.
There is a danger of X server instability if swap space gets too low. Since
the X server does not gracefully handle memory allocation failure (caused by
being out of swap space), it may not indicate that the swap is getting low.
As a precaution, Illustrator checks how much swap space is free whenever an
operation is performed that would cause X server memory to be allocated.
This includes opening windows and zooming. If less than 10MB is available,
Illustrator prevents the operation from continuing and brings up the warning
dialog.
Solution:
If you receive this error, you should add additional swap space before con-
tinuing (see the Getting Started Guide). If you cannot add additional swap
space, it is highly recommended that you save your open documents and quit
the application. In extreme circumstances Illustrator as a consequence of no
available swap will crash in which case either a console or system message
will report the event.

INACCURATE DATES ON FILES TRANSFERRED VIA NFS/SHARE TO/FROM MACINTOSH
-----------------------------------
Files transferred from the Mac to UNIX using NFS/Share have inaccurate cre-
ation dates when viewed in Illustrator INFO/File Systems/Get Info. Once the
files are edited in UNIX Illustrator, the file modification date becomes correct,
however the file creation date will still be wrong. Files created on UNIX and
transferred to the Mac will add 40 years to the file creation date.
An environment variable ILLUSTRATOR_AD_START_DATE is provided to give
users the ability to maintain correct file creation dates and work around a bug in
Intercon's NFS/Share. AppleDouble standard, published by Apple Computer, says
that the date info resource should be an offset from Jan 1, 2000, but Intercon
writes the date in a format based on Jan 1, 1904. Set this environment variable
to 1904 while you transfer files from the Mac to UNIX and the file creation dates
will remain correct. Once you are done transferring the files, unset this environment
variable or future files created in UNIX Illustrator will have incorrect creation
dates. The default value for ILLUSTRATOR_AD_START_DATE is 2000. This
value will maintain correct file creation dates in the UNIX environment.
IMPORTING TEXT FROM FRAMEMAKER AND INTERLEAF PUBLISHER
-----------------------------------
FrameMaker and Interleaf Publisher save in several different formats. How-
ever, not all these formats are supported by Illustrator's Import mechanism.
Formats besides those listed below will include all the internal formatting
settings along with the user's text. For best results, then, use only the
following supported formats:
FrameMaker: Interchange (MIF) format
Interleaf Publisher: ASCII or Release 5 ASCII formats
